The delight of our cuisine have been influenced over the years by Europe, North Africa and the East, In 1498, Vasco da Gama discovered the maritime route leading to the valuable spices up to then treasured in the Far East, and he introduce coriander, pepper, ginger, curry, saffron and paprika in Europe, thanks to the expansion of our overseas empire we bring back home many other exotic products, such as rice and tea from the Orient, coffee and peanuts from Africa, and pineapples, peppers, tomatoes and potatoes from the New World.
According with the region where you're you've different kinds of typical food and dishes, this region is a fish and selfish heaven, starting with the fresh fish, the mussles from Cabo da Roca or Ericeira and the crustaceans from Cascais.
Other specialties typical of this area include the pastries of Cascais, such as the nuts and egg dainties, the “queijadas” (little milk cakes) of Sintra, the Colares wine (near the Sintra hills) and the sweet wine from Carcavelos.
In Lisbon itself, you can try all the Portuguese cuisine specialities, like grilled sardines, fish soups and several dishes cooked with codfish and an enormous amount of meet dishes, mainly pork ones.
