King Manuel I and his descendants - Queen Maria I, his second wife, King João III and Queen Catarina - are buried in marble tombs in the chancel of the church. In the side chapels off the transept we can find, on the north side, the mausoleum of Cardinal-King Henrique and the raised tombs of the sons of King Manuel I and, on the south side, the mausoleum of King Sebastião and the raised tombs of the sons of King João II. In the late 19th century, the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões were placed under the choir gallery of the church, both tombs being designed by the sculptor Costa Mota . In the chapter room we can find the tomb of the writer Alexandre Herculano and in the former refectory the tomb of the poet and writer Fernando Pessoa.
