Water Museum:
Winner of the 1990 European Council Award, Lisbon ’s Water Museum is located in the building where the first water-pumping plant was installed.
The museum commemorates Manuel da Maia, the 18th century engineer who masterminded the Águas Livres aqueduct.
Dominated by four massive steam engines, the exhibition portrays how Lisbon has received its water since Roman times.
Other sections feature the aqueduct and one of Lisbon ’s oldest fountains, the Chafariz d’El Rei, located in the city’s Alfama quarter.
