Built in 1960 for the 500th-year celebration of Henry the Navigator's birth. The monument is built as the front part of a ship facing the river. Inside there is a lift to the top where you have a magnificent view.
Henry the Navigator founded the Portuguese tradition of maritime discoverers and is the main figure. Behind him is a procession of personalities connected to the discovery of India and the new world. This includes Vasco da Gama, Cristovao Columbus and Portugal 's national poet Luis Camões who wrote "The Lusiads" which follows the achievements of the Portuguese discoverers.
